Malta Gaming Authority Releases AI Gaming Charter for Responsible AI Use

The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) has introduced a voluntary framework setting out guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence (AI) within the gaming sector.

Developed in partnership with the Malta Digital Innovation Authority (MDIA), the AI Gaming Charter aims to help gambling operators manage AI systems responsibly while maintaining transparency and human oversight.

The Charter covers gaming functions where AI is gradually being used more, like responsible gambling, anti-money laundering, fraud detection, customer support, and player protection, providing operators with advice on managing the risks associated with these activities.

It calls for governance structures, risk assessments, ongoing AI monitoring, and processes for identifying and responding to potential incidents.

The framework also takes a risk-based approach, with higher-impact AI systems subject to stronger expectations around testing, monitoring, and oversight.

While it won’t create new legal obligations, it aims to complement existing regulatory frameworks, including the EU AI Act and General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

The framework was developed following feedback from gaming licensees and other stakeholders, with the MGA and MDIA explaining that the Charter is designed to provide practical and proportionate guidance as the use of AI in the gaming industry continues to expand.
